We are pleased to present
[FIGUR], an exhibition by Miho Dohi, Gabrielle Hartley, and Yoko
Terauchi at CADAN Yurakucho.

Miho Dohi creates sculptural works by combining various
materials. These works have an organic presence, as the different types of
materials maintain an exquisite balance of harmony and repulsion. Dohi
carefully scoops up the effects of each material’s shape, texture, and color on
each other, examining them from all angles, and explores the possibility of
creating something unknown. In this exhibition, she will present for the first
time a series of drawings based on the theme of “seeing”.

Gabriel Hartley creates paintings based on sketches he
drawing every day and photographs. The shapes of cityscapes, flora, and fauna
become increasingly abstract on the canvas, and the layers of color and texture,
applied using a variety of techniques, alter the viewer’s perception of the
image depending on the light and time of day. This exhibition will feature a
selection of recent paintings using tenjiku-cotton.

Yoko Terauchi creates sculptures based on her suspicion of
opposing concepts that are taken for granted, such as back and front, inside
and outside. All of the works in this exhibition are created on a sheet of
paper or lead plate, without adding or subtracting anything, to prove that
there is no such thing as two sides of the same coin, not by modeling but by
the inevitable formation of the materials themselves. This exhibition includes
two of his lead sculptures that have never been exhibited in Japan.

Although the forms of the three artists’ works are different
in their own ways, the visual experience of looking at the forms in which they
appear stimulates our perception.
