Agostino Quaranta / Turbo Sud Lab
27 May–5 Jun 2022
Yorkshire Sculpture Park
West Bretton, UK
Following
a residency at YSP in 2019, Royal College of Art Graduate Award
winner Agostino Quaranta presents
an exhibition in the Boathouse as part of his long term
research-based project, Turbo Sud, focused on the music culture of
South Italy.
The
exhibition includes a pop-up
audio-visual installation exploring
the mechanisms behind the revival of Pizzica pizzica, a music style
typical of Puglia in the South-East of Italy. Between the imaginary
and the factual, Quaranta asks questions about authenticity,
collective memory, and the value of sonic traditions, examining the
re-manufacturing process of an ancient music genre on the verge of
extinction.
The
artist will play a related DJ set in James Turrell’s
Deer Shelter Skyspace.
