In music, a motif is defined as a short rhythmic or melodic passage that is repeated or evoked in various parts of a composition. Through this exhibition’s works, motif explores the formal qualities of this “passage”. Playing with repetition, the artists have created pieces that expose the structure and movement behind these abstract and geometric marks. This repetition process is sometimes applied to highlight subtle imperfections in markmaking generated by human touch, and other times to explore variations in a larger segmented ensemble. Historically, the motif is linked to ornamental and decorative art, and is an integral part of the craftsperson’s work. By decontextualizing the repeated motif from its traditional usage, a conversation is opened on the artist’s status in relation to the craftsperson, as well as on the accumulation of labor and time in the pictorial space.
