Residenza La Fornace / Milano
Residenza La Fornace is a project of artistic documentation which invites groups of artists to explore a dialogue with an ancient Italian farmhouse.
La Fornace is the name of this typical Lombard farmhouse dated from the second half of the nineteenth century, still active today in the agritourism sector. It boasts the typical architectural characteristics of these ancient architectural complexes destined for the cultivation, people’s housing and animal’s farming, thus representing a reality of aggregation and architectural social collaboration that has survived to the present day.
Within this specific context arises the need to involve different artists in four exhibition projects each year, which follow the rhythms of nature. Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring have demarcated the first year of activity (2018-2019) while the second year (2019-2020) will be guided by the lunar phases: New Moon, Crescent Moon, Full Moon and Waning Moon.
The documentary material of artistic interventions will be presented only online, without the possibility for the public to visit the exhibition physically. The goal is to free the farmhouse from its geographical-peripheral dimension and, at the same time, preserve the sanctity of the site.
Today, everyday life is no longer regulated by the rhythm of cycles of nature, but rather by images. Residenza La Fornace project does not call for a return to rural life, but is rather a reflection of what remains of it through contemporary language.
The project stems from the idea of Edoardo Manzoni, visual artist, to open the farmhouse where he grew up and in which he is still carrying on his artistic research. At the helm of Residenza La Fornace, Edoardo Manzoni is joined by Giada Olivotto, independent curator and co-director of the artist-run space Sonnenstube of Lugano in Switzerland.
