FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Freddy Fan
Matthew Brown
March 6th, 2025
Freddy is pleased to announce Freddy Fan, a solo exhibition by Western Australia-based artist Matthew Brown. Freddy Fan is the last exhibition planned for the church location in Harris, New York. Freddy will continue to operate as an extension of Joshua Abelow’s studio practice, without fixed location or timeline, focusing on collaborative projects.
Freddy Fan is concerned with the subversive possibilities of subjective, fan-oriented modes of collection and distribution. Like artworks, objects produced as commodities for collection are subject to different economies and value systems than those of typical consumer products. Within these highly subjective, fan-based collections, value is incredibly nuanced – an object’s viability for collection is not necessarily determined by its initial retail or secondary market value, but often by hidden logics known only to sincere fans. This is particularly evident within the collecting practices and exchange markets for fans of the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise; often assigning inflated values and systems of want to copies, kitbashed, and facsimile items over official or licensed merchandise. Brown has never seen the NOES films – he is however a huge fan of the Freddy exhibition program and has dreamed for many years of presenting work at the church.
