On Holding brings together a recent video by Anna-Bella Papp and a new series of sculptures by Jamie Kane that are both shaped by forms of holding.

In Anna-Bella’s video “dishwasher, Leperre-Durot c.1785 ”, is an arrangement of still images based on the pattern described by the movement of water inside a dishwasher. The images are analog photographs taken at disparate moments, showing a lidded vase produced by Leperre-Durot c.1785 on display in room 1.9 at the Rijksmuseum.

Jamie’s new sculptural series start from referencing the padded inserts from baby carriers and strollers. Surfaces that support and make contact with a baby’s body as they move through the world. These consequently become filled with scraps of food, dirt, and get wet in the rain. By translating these forms into clay shrinkage slabs, they become another kind of support. Shrinkage slabs are typically a sacrificial object that takes the strain of friction as the clay dries and shrinks, holding tension on the others behalf, often cracking and breaking in the process.

Here, holding is not fixed, but rather an impression shaped by contact, movement, and time.
