For the exhibition Study of a Lion, Miriam Stoney draws from art historical
depictions of Saint Jerome: known for his work as a translator, he is usually
depicted with a lion companion. A series of annotated film stills imagines
the life of this lion, who once departed the wilderness to follow this saint
into (the) study. The installation What Prospects Leo Rising invokes the
somewhat contrived scene of scholarly labour in Antonello da Messina’s
painting, Saint Jerome in his Study. Here, Miriam Stoney is interested in
the physical and material staging of text-work as a predetermining factor in
what can and cannot be written. There are many slippages and conflations.
Her dog, Siggi, will play the role of the lion.
Biography
Miriam Stoney (b. 1994, Scunthorpe, UK) is a writer, translator and artist
based in Vienna, Austria. Recent exhibitions and performances include:
