The long-term project Girl, Battle is neither documentary nor about handboll as a sport per se. It stems from my own experiences as a staunchly comitted handball player in adolscent years. What was the actual breadth of the game is something I’ve asked myself. One thing appears clear in mind; the inherent realities were confined not only to the playing court. I’m reminded every so often that handball in public is perceived as a jovial communal sport which ultimately means a reductive gaze. I certaintly would call to mind that the physical and psychological pressure was anything but negligible. Because playing coincided with being in a precarious transitional state between child and adulthood the impact was all the greater. As an artist today I’m visualizing situations and moments which ideally might just let on the stakes.
