Highlights of 2023 ART021

 

Global vision and extensive opportunity for local galleries

We are delighted to announce that the 11th edition of ART021 Contemporary Art Fair will take place at Shanghai Exhibition Center from 9th to 12th November, marking a record-breaking number of participating galleries as well as the largest scale of the fair to date. 150 finest galleries from 16 countries and regions, and 33 cities worldwide, will gather together, bringing nearly ten thousand  artworks. ART021 will showcase a vigour art scene and increasing interest in international exchange.

 

Main Galleries presents 130 finest galleries, among them 24 galleries are participated for the first time. Numerous blue-chip galleries, including Almine Rech, David Zwirner, Gagosian, Mennour, White Cube, to name a few. Gladstone and Cabinet make their debut at the fair, bring high quality artworks in line with leading edge of global contemporary practice. A few galleries mark their 11th attendance in the fair, such as Perrotin, A Thousand Plateau, ShanghArt, Hive Center of Contemporary art, Beijing Commune, White Space, Antenna Space, Asian Art Center, Line Gallery, and Hwas Gallery.

 

As one of the earliest established contemporary art fair in China, ART021 commits to the original mission   to keep global vision with local root. It maintains a continual support mutually with local galleries, providing extensive opportunities for display and circulation of various artistic practices. To a large extent, ART021 witnesses the evolution of China’s contemporary art claiming its voice. This year, ART021 champions galleries from 17 cities across the country. Many outstanding local galleries, who have dedicated in art industry for long, stand as the key force. Galleries from Shanghai includes Madein Gallery, BANK MABSOCIETY, Vacancy gallery, Art+Shanghai Gallery, to name a few. Many exhibitors are representative galleries located in Beijing, like Magician Space, Platform China, Mocube and Triumph Gallery. They all actively promote established and potential Chinese artists. Additionally, ART021 illustrates a trend of decentralization by including galleries from broader regions like Sichuan, Chongqing, Jiangsu, Anhui, Shandong and Xinjiang, such as Fine Arts Literature Center (Wuhan), KEYI Gallery (Hefei), GAOTAI Gallery (Urumqi), Enclave Contemporary (Shenzhen). Together they delicate to explore artistic resources within the local context and showcase the latest practices in contemporary art integrated with diverse cultural frameworks.

 

APPROACH focuses on emerging galleries and supporting young artists. Featuring 20 galleries and 11 of which are new comers, it will showcase young forces from China, Korea, Greece, Japan, France, Canada, Latvia, and Russia. Their works span from painting, sculpture, installation and video, digging into the possibilities of cultural differences in today’s world. This year sees 15 Special Programs, including auction houses, art publisher, studios and museums, will ignite greater public enthusiasm and inspire individuals in the realms of art and design. 13

 

Forums invite experts and celebrities in arts and culture, further expanding the social impact and bolstering educational initiatives. ART021 strives to provide a global communication and trading platform for galleries, museums, art institutions, collectors and art lovers. As a main project in the 22nd Shanghai International Arts Festival, and the major sector of the 5th Shanghai International Art Trade Week, it continues to enhance the influence of Shanghai’s art industry, making it an international art trading center, and developing the ‘Shanghai brand’ in the global scope.
