Perpétuo is the first solo exhibition by Brazilian artist Samuel Alves de Jesus, on view from July 21 to August 15 at Yehudi Hollander-Pappi in São Paulo. Across the gallery’s five rooms, Alves de Jesus presents a series of new works spanning sculpture, installation, painting, and sound, in which salt is omnipresent.

In the exhibition text, curator and researcher João Paulo Quintella highlights the abstract language of the show, stating: “Samuel’s exhibition seems to generate a few hypotheses. Regarding the fundamental traits, Samuel makes me reconsider a keyword against which all sorts of antagonisms bear down: communication. This concept has been quantified to exhaustion, yet it still holds a foundational place in our relationships. Samuel reminds us that communication does not reside in the media but is centered in the body and in the abstract, unquantifiable effects it reveals.”

Samuel Alves de Jesus (São Paulo, 1999) lives and works in Taboão da Serra, Brazil. Working across watercolor, sculpture, drawing, video, and installation, Alves de Jesus explores the symbolic relationship between nature and divinity through material processes. His practice presents the visual and material traces of this connection in abstract forms, as well as in the unpredictable behavior of minerals such as salt within his sculptures. Recent exhibitions include group shows at Solar dos Abacaxis (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Claraboia (São Paulo, Brazil), Turf Projects (London, UK), Yehudi Hollander-Pappi (São Paulo, Brazil), Sharp Projects (Copenhagen, Denmark), Gisela Freier Kunstraum Kulturring (Berlin, Germany), Castiglioni (São Paulo, Brazil), Espaço Buero (São Paulo, Brazil), Shmorévaz (Paris, France), CCSP (São Paulo, Brazil), Quase Espaço (São Paulo, Brazil), and participation in Festival Estéreo Picnic (Bogotá, Colombia). In 2025, the artist presented his latest film, Hunter, at the platform aarea. Alves de Jesus was a finalist of the Sauer Art Prize at SP-Arte 2025.
