Daily Lazy and opbo studio are happy to present the video screening Somewhere in Circles, which will take place on Tuesday, 23 September at 8.30 p.m. at opbo studio in Piraeus, Athens. The screening brings together video-works by the artists Jungju An + Sojung Jun, Danae Io, Roman Selim Khereddine, Katerina Komianou and Jan Vorisek.
In constant motion, the presented videos follow the perspective of a wandering camera. Orbiting a specific site of interest, each work becomes an intimate observation, filmed from a point-of-view perspective. Objects, places and beings are observed, circled and revisited; subtitles, sound and images are repeated and reconfigured. Moving between the city of Thebes, the storage room of a taxidermist, an underground passage in Hong Kong, the fountains of Athens, and the pine forests of Jeju Island, the works guide the viewer through a shifting landscape of images, text, sound and silence.
Rather than simply going in circles, the screening revolves around the re-evaluation of a first impression. By examining our relation to the territories we inhabit, the moving image becomes evidence, a nostalgic object, and a space for speculation and renegotiation. Across six distinct visual languages, Somewhere in Circles reflects on the poetics of narration and how images are constructed to remember the past and to imagine alternative future scenarios.
The screening is curated by Marius Quiblier. He is a curator based in Zurich and contributes to Daily Lazy since 2023.
